What is the importance of thoughts?

Thoughts maketh a person. They shape our life. If you observe yourself and the way you think about a particular situation you will understand that the same situation can be felt in completely different ways just by the way you look at it. It is rightly said that a pessimist or a negative thinker finds problems in every situation and on the other hand an optimist or a positive thinker finds opportunities in every event or situation of life. Thoughts are the most powerful thing that we as human beings have in our life. We make or break our life based on our thoughts. Hence having good self talk, positive thoughts, building happiness in our mind is a very important thing. If you are not able to do this you will find your life becoming a living hell because you have made it so.

Why do we have negative thoughts?

Negative thoughts are a natural tendency to detect threat and understand that there is danger. It is like an alert our mind sends to our body to judge if there is threat and be prepared to counter it. However apart from the basic required negative thought process that is important for our survival the excess of negative thought process is because we want to hide behind them when things are not working in our favor. We learn to push blame on luck, someone else or to situations and then stay in that comfort zone just feeling bad about some situation or about our own self. These negative thoughts are the result of any of the following reasons

  • Overthinking about situations, people or things
  • Habit of processing thoughts in a wrong direction
  • Constant stress and anxiety
  • Positive thoughts need work and are harder than negative thoughts

Why is it important to get rid of negative thoughts?

Negative thoughts take away your efficiency. They can trigger mood swings, stress, feelings of worthlessness or depression. If a person is in general having a negative thought pattern then they start distrusting themselves, their abilities, the people around them and hence it leads to strained relationships, inefficient work and problematic behavior. If there is continuous negative thought pattern then you will be just stretching across the day in distress and will fail to live a happy life. Hence it is very much essential to get rid of negative thought patterns.

How to get rid of Negative thoughts?

First important thing is to understand that you are creating negative thoughts. There is always a way of replacing a negative thought with a positive one. You cannot control each situation hence we need to understand how to modify our outlook towards each situation. This can be done by getting rid of negative thoughts. There are various ways in which the negative thoughts can be got rid of:

  • Pause and understand the situation- understand the difference between things you can control and things you cannot. If you can control things then work on them and if you cannot then change your outlook towards them
  • Replace each negative thought with a positive one
  • Practice mindfulness
  • Use Therapy or counseling

Can counseling and therapy help in negative thought relief?

Counseling can definitely help in getting rid of negative thought patterns. There are various therapies conventional and non-conventional methods that can help you come out of the habit of negative thought pattern. You can get rid of negative thought patterns on your own but it may take a lot of time and energy. Also there is chance of recurrence if you do not work on them in a patterned way and remove the root cause of the issues then you may fall into a trap of problems. Counseling and proper guidance with therapy makes your journey easier. Also the chances of further increase in problems like anxiety, stress, depression etc will be ruled out with the help received.
