What is a Phobia?

Phobia has a connection to fear. A deep rooted fear of something, some event or like. Fear is a natural phenomenon of every living thing. However Phobias are fears that are irrational, excessive and recurrent. Examples of Phobias could be like

  • Claustrophobia: This fear relates to fear of closed spaces like a lift
  • Ophidiophobia: This is the fear of snakes
  • Hydrophobia: It is the fear of water

Types of Phobias.

According to DSM (Diagnostic and statistical manual) which classifies mental disorders phobias have five main categories

  1. Fears related to animals
  2. Fears related to blood, injury, medical issues etc
  3. Fears related to natural environment like thunder, darkness etc
  4. Fears related to specific situations like flying (flight), driving and likewise
  5. Other fears not included above like loud noises, drowning etc

Recognizing you have a Phobia

People with different phobias are aware that their fear is irrational but still they are unable to do anything about it. There are times when the phobia can interfere with your daily routines and make even your regular activities and normal life difficult. For Example: A person with Claustrophobia that is fear of closed spaces decides not to take a job since his office is located on the 11th floor and he will need to take a lift each day for that purpose.
